Lawrence is a senior executive academic manager, designer and illustrator, writer, curator, industry speaker and board member.

Lawrence has led schools and faculties at some of the UK’s most prominent art schools and universities including London College of Communication at University of the Arts London, Kingston University, University of Brighton and Ravensbourne University London.

Lawrence was most recently interim Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at Birmingham City University where he led the Birmingham Institute for Creative Arts, Birmingham Institute of Jewellery, Fashion and Textiles, Birmingham Institute of Media and English, Birmingham School of Architecture and Design and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. His portfolio comprised 5000 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students and 295 academic and research staff and 145 professional service staff. He was responsible for and manages an overall annual budget of £57.9m.

Prior to moving into Higher Education Lawrence set up and launched a ground-breaking illustration studio and two international illustration agencies; with offices both in London and New York. He recently created the vision for and launched The Institute for Creativity and Technology in the new Design District on Greenwich Peninsula, setting up an in-house design and branding agency CreativeLab and the new GradSchool, a connected-to-industry suite of postgraduate courses.

He has delivered keynote lectures, taught and run workshops and consulted nationally and internationally in over 25 countries. His design and illustration clients include major international newspapers, magazines, book publishers, design studios and advertising agencies across 1000+ commercial commissions.
Lawrence is Professor of Illustration; he is the author of nine published books on graphic arts, including Fifty Years of Illustration and Ladybird by Design and is contributor to numerous international publications including Computer Arts, Creative Review, Design Week, Grafik and Varoom.

He is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a trustee of both the De La Warr Pavilion and Creative Conscience and a former trustee of D&AD. Lawrence has twice been appointed to the position of Vice-President on the Executive Board of ico-D, the International Council of Design (formally icograda).
Lawrence has won numerous awards, named Design Champion by The Drum in 2015, and has served on national and international juries.
