Kamisu Bousai Arena is a cultural/athletic/disaster prevention complex. The graphic system aims to embody the surrounding landscape, using the elements of ‘light’ and ‘water’ to create a pixel drawing. Each pixel is taken from a single Japanese kanji character. Kanjis are logographs, which means one can instinctively understand their meaning like an emoji. At first glance, the wall looks like an abstract image, yet when one steps closer to recognise ‘light’ and ‘water’ in the pixels, the mural takes on a new meaning, becoming a horizon glowing red from the sunrise and waves of a blue sea.
