Good Campaign of the Week: The Ultimate Death Scene

Good Campaign of the Week is a regular feature that celebrates creative social good campaigns. Each Monday, together with Branding Magazine, we highlight a new project from across the globe that demonstrates a positive social message with innovation at its heart – showcasing the brands and businesses using creativity to do well by doing good. 

'The Ultimate Death Scene' Social Good Campaign

“Renowned Australian Actor Dies” runs the headline on this campaign against whaling. Sea Shepherd are renowned for uncompromising tactics – their logo features a dark, nautical take on the skull and crossbones motif – but their latest online film is possibly their most challenging yet.

Viewers are asked to spend 90 seconds watching acclaimed actor David Field endure an agonising on-stage death. It’s called the “Ultimate Death Scene”– watch it and you’ll understand why.

Sea Shepherd Whale Campaign

The scene is designed to recreate the final moments experienced by a hunted whale. It’s a harrowing thing to watch Field act out – let alone a whale experience it for real. As the film tells us, “The truth is, [whales] are first pursued to the point of exhaustion. Then shot with an explosive harpoon causing massive internal trauma. They are then violently dragged to a vessel, and shot some more. Before finally dying alone in their own blood.“

Accompanying the film is a parallax website which details the grim processes involved in whaling – The Chase, The Harpoon, The Drag and Death. With uncompromising detail, the words and images take us on a journey and ends with a call to action compelling you to donate.

Independent Australian agency The Works produced the film accompanied with online and print posters. It’s notable that everyone involved in making the film actually donated their time for free. “The Ultimate Death Scene” has already caused a storm online, with the proceeds of donations going towards Sea Shepard’s actions in helping conserve and protect the ocean's ecosystems and species.
