Exhibit A-i

Award: Shortlist

Shortlist / Photography / Fine Art & Conceptual / 2023

For over ten years, the Australian government has inhumanely detained refugees in offshore detention centres, banning cameras and journalists from exposing it. Only by making injustice visible can we provoke change. As part of Exhibit A-i, social justice law firm Maurice Blackburn conducted 300 hours of interviews with refugees, recording the atrocities they faced in offshore detention. With AI technicians and photojournalists, survivors created the first visual evidence of their experiences. These were integrated into stock libraries alongside real photojournalism.

What did the judges have to say?

Finally, we see AI-generated work with a concept and a meaningful social message. It uses computer technology to illustrate the unseen world and also inspire us, showing what's possible with AI-generated imagery, and the role it could play in our future lives

Stanley Wong, Founder and Creative Director, 84000 Communications

Amazing and clever idea. One of the first times that AI has been used with a proper purpose that will have a direct impact on people's lives.
