Born Guilty

Award: Shortlist

Shortlist / Editing / Film / 2022

Born Guilty was based on the true story of Huwe Barton, who in 1991 was wrongfully convicted of killing his own mother at the age of 16. After spending 19 years in prison as an innocent man, he was exonerated with the help of the Innocence Project, the organisation that fights for the clarification of judicial errors and supports wrongfully convicted people. For Burton, running was an outlet for dealing with pain in these hard times, so he compares his life to a marathon. The film employed this metaphor as it relayed the long struggle for justice that African American people have had to fight for in the US.
