Sonho, which translates to Dream, is a 14-minute short film that tells the story of Marcelo Generoso, aka Nego Bala. The 22-year-old funk artist was born and raised in São Paulo’s ‘Crackland’, a forgotten neighbourhood affected by addiction and homelessness. Generoso was first arrested due to drug trafficking charges at the age of 12, and during his time at a juvenile detention centre, he wrote the lyrics for Sonho, constantly mumbling the melody so he wouldn’t forget it. The film is a message of hope to millions of other kids: ‘Regardless of the place, I will dream and fight.’
