GAWDS

Award: Shortlist

Shortlist / Next Director / Documentary / 2015

Background –

GAWDS is an intimate, unvarnished glimpse into a Navajo teen's life as he opens up on camera about doing jail for property damage, becoming a man in Native American culture, and his love for Pow Wow dancing. The film was shot on location at the Navajo Indian Reservation in Fort Defiance, Arizona.

Solution –

The subject was extremely shy so to build trust, I hung out with him and became his friend. The first night on the Rez, we went out tagging with him. He saw how committed we were to following him, scaling buildings and climbing roofs. He was likeDamn ya'll crazy too.
