West Beach Café, Littlehampton
Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Leisure & Tourism / 2009
Asif Khan’s first project was commissioned on his graduation from the Architectural Association. It is the product of local craftsmanship, technical innovation, a spectacular site, and a remarkable client. This traditional seaside fish and chip shop was re-imagined as a doll’s house and designed to embrace English weather. Equipped to adjust its configuration seasonally, in summer the entire façade can be swung open to fill the dining space with sea air, create a room outside on the beach, or turn the café into a stage for concerts. During winter and high winds, the façade is closed and full height sash windows provide extraordinary views across the English Channel.
