Fucking Hell

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Book Design / Entire Books / 2009

This book is a catalogue for an exhibition by Jake and Dinos Chapman at the White Cube art gallery. The artwork titled 'Fucking Hell' took the artists four years to make, and the book was an important document for the work beyond the lifespan of the exhibition. As well as showing the epic scale of the work, the book highlights some of the amazing detail and narrative involved in the scenes. Each book was individually burnt – as well as the obvious reference to the fires of Hell, this refers to the first Hell sculpture destroyed in a warehouse fire, plus the book burning that took place during the Nazi era. The fonts used are from this period and the endpapers are made from reversed swastikas.
