Aware of Ross Lovegrove’s ability to combine organic forms with sophisticated technology and materials, VitrA approached him to create a complete bathroom experience for the design conscious consumer. Lovegrove visited Istanbul, the physical and spiritual home of the international bathroom brand, and the Istanbul collection was born. What Lovegrove learnt about Turkish culture is visible throughout the collection, including a patterning based on Ottoman calligraphy. The sanitaryware pushed the design boundaries of what was thought technically possible, creating the world’s first freestanding washbasin, achieved by glazing and firing two separate components. Lovegrove has designed a collection that flows together like water, with each element appearing to rise from the surface as if liquid.
