Underscore N°1: The ___ Issue
Wood Pencil / Magazine & Newspaper Design / Entire Magazines / 2010
Underscore was developed with the reader in mind: carefully selected paper stock for texture, weight and readability; a convenient size for fit and portability; clean and concise layout; minimal advertising for an uninterrupted flow; and a soundtrack to accompany the entire experience. ‘Emptiness is a vessel waiting to be filled’, says Kenya Hara. With ‘Underscore N°1: The ___ Issue’, the theme, front cover, and six back pages of the inaugural issue were left empty. With the notion that everything begins with an idea, a pencil was attached for both symbolism and functionality. The magazine became a journal to inspire readers, whocould pencil in ideas of their own.
