Girl

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Music Videos / Special Effects / 2006

When considering how to visually represent the lighthearted tone and dark lyrics of Beck's 'Girl’, Motion Theory found inspiration in Al Jaffee's classic fold-ins for MAD magazine, creating real-life scenes in which reality seems to fold in on itself. Throughout the video Beck travels and performs the song, moving through naturalistic settings in East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights and McArthur Park. Motion Theory's resident L.A. natives wanted to show off a piece of the city's genuine culturally-vibrant side which they felt often gets lost behind the superficiality and glitz of Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The 'fold-ins' included practical pieces like maps, popup books and pamphlets, as well as shots that combine practical and CG effects to fold whole buildings, murals and streets. Like the Al Jaffee fold-ins, that inspired the concept, the video's ‘fold-ins’ always reveal a new twist. Reinforcing the idea of the hidden meanings in the song, and the world around us.
