Mario
Mario
While women's football is growing in Mexico, fans still discriminate against Women's National Team players. On 19 October – National Day Against Discrimination – audiences were introduced to Mario, a film about the top goalscorer of the women’s national team, Maribel ‘Marigol’ Domínguez, who pretended to be a man for three years in order to play football. Mario was directed by a filmmaker who focuses on LGBTQ+ and feminist narratives (and is a fan of Domínguez), which adds a unique, sensitive edge to the story. The film is a tribute to Domínguez and all the girls who triumph over discrimination.
