Frank was born in Stuttgart in 1967. His formative years were spent forming his own bands (Die Gründer & Dasmango) in which he was the singer and guitarist, working as a kind of amateur journalist for a local magazine and rejecting to go to the army. After finishing school, 2 years of civil service and 5 years of working as a self-trained graphic designer in advertising agencies in Stuttgart and Hamburg, Frank travelled to the UK to study at Camberwell College of Arts, where he met a Greek student named Billy Kiosoglou. Frank and Billy went on to complete MAs at the Royal College of Art before setting up Brighten the Corners.

Over the years they've worked for numerous clients including the Goethe-Institut, Italian Cultural Institute, Steidl, German Post Office, Frieze Publishing, Vitra Design Museum, Zumtobel and Anish Kapoor. They've won quite a few awards, including a Yellow Pencil at D&AD, Gold Cube at ADC Global, Gold Nail at ADC Germany, Certificates of Typographic Excellence at TDC New York, Best German Book Design Stiftung Buchkunst Awards and the Grand Prix at TDC Tokyo. Their work was also selected for the Designs of the Year exhibition at the Design Museum in London.

After having taught at Brighton, Kingston, Maidstone and Stuttgart from 1998 to 2005 Frank became a Professor at the Faculty of Design in Darmstadt in 2006 where he is teaching to this day.
