Symphony for a Beloved Sun – Anish Kapoor

For the catalogue documenting Anish Kapoor’s major exhibition at Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau gallery, we developed a design that articulates the tension created by bringing contemporary artworks into the MGB’s neo-renaissance space. The exhibition’s central work consisted of large red wax blocks dropping off conveyor belts onto the gallery floor. The catalogue, which was conventional in its materials and proportions, was stained with red oil paint that seeped into its first pages, giving a red cut to the edges that were also sewn with red thread. We wanted our book – itself a reference to the first MGB catalogue of 1890 – to be both elegant and unsettling.
