In Gaza humanitarian aid have been blocked and remain heavily restricted by Israel. To draw attention to the blockade and get medical aid into Gaza the NGO Caritas proposed to Pope Francis that his popemobile be converted into a mobile children's clinic. Pope Francis blessed the initiative in his last months. It was launched by The New York Times one week after his funeral. In November 2025, the converted popemobile was unveiled to international media in Bethlehem. It will treat 200 children per day, and has inspired other NGOs to build 7 more mobile clinics.
