Corinthians is the People’s Team. In 1915, the soccer club launched its first jersey against racial discrimination: patterned with black and white stripes that raised an issue that was already urgent. More than a century later, racism in football persists. 41% of people working in Brazilian football have been victims of racism, with the vast majority of incidents (53%) occurring inside stadiums. In response, Nike, Corinthians's sponsor, took a stand to reaffirm its commitment to the fight against racism and decided to use the launch of its new official jersey as a platform for the cause.
