Bakemono

Bakemono is a typeface family that explores the tension between fixed versus proportional width, mixing the characteristics of mechanical typewriter technology with the intuitions of Eastern brush calligraphy. The typeface name comes from the Japanese term bakemono – a type of shapeshifting supernatural creature (yōkai) in Japanese folklore – which also inspired the project website, bakemono-font.com. The morphing nature of bakemono is reflected in the type family, which comes in three variants: monospaced (mono), proportional (text), intermediate (stereo).
