2breakthesilence

Every two minutes, a woman is assaulted in Brazil. According to the Secretary of Public Safety, the number of incidents of domestic violence increased during the pandemic, yet the number of reports made via the Center for Women's Services Helpline fell drastically. With this in mind, the Fala Mulher Association and RedeTV! decided to reach the victims of violence. Together they created a film, 2breakthesilence, with 720 different women representing the total number of assaults per day in Brazil. At the end of the two minutes, women were encouraged to report their cases via Dial 180.

D&AD Jury

This film stayed with me as it was brilliantly crafted and emotionally effective. It uses a disarmingly simple technique of stop motion black and white photography to bring the harrowing story of domestic violence to light. You are drawn into the film by music that has been composed and performed with heart-wrenching rawness.

The execution of this project is extremely conceptual and goes far beyond what we are used to seeing and hearing in advertising projects. We can feel the cello as if it was a voice of the victims' pain reported in the film. The sound and music help the message get under the skin of the viewer, with a unique and visceral aesthetic.
