Paper Alphabet

Paper Alphabet is a bespoke typeface created for ‘Sculpture Today’, a comprehensive and richly illustrated overview of contemporary sculpture published by Phaidon Press. The alphabet evolved from a question: what makes sculpture different from other art forms? By cutting and folding a flat sheet of paper, a three-dimensional alphabet was devised, which was used on the cover and inside the book. It communicated all the subtleties of a three-dimensional object: depth, surface and shadow. A huge effort went into crafting and arranging the letterforms, each one playfully varying in shape, with the depth remaining constant. The letterforms are easiest to read when viewed directly from above. At the same time, you can also appreciate that you are looking at a hand-made object.
