To broaden the audience of FilmThreat.com, an online fanzine and retailer dedicated to bold independent film, we chose to reach out to less adventurous moviegoers. To make these ‘indie-phobes’ warm to not-so-Hollywood fare, we had to first help them overcome their fear of independent film and its stereotypical trappings: unhappy endings, subtitles and the like. To do this, we chose to poke fun at their fear by parodying the melodramatic, anti-drug scare films that filled the airwaves in the 1980s, in which any character who tried anything remotely risky was instantly killed.
