On 7 March 2022, in a bid to counterattack economic sanctions, the Russian government legalised piracy of content from 'enemy' countries, encouraging Russian citizens to download popular Western entertainment for free. Yet this presented a unique opportunity to bypass censorship in Russia. Nebo launched Torrents of Truth, a coordinated cyber-offensive that turned popular peer-to-peer platforms into a mass information channel. It allowed journalists to disguise their unfiltered reports about the war on Ukraine as pirated torrents of movies, series, songs, softwares, and books.
