Modernism: Designing a New World 1914-1939

'Modernism: Designing a New World 1914-1939' at the Victoria and Albert Museum ran from April to July 2006. It was the first major exhibition to explore the Modernist movement from an international perspective and across the arts. Pentagram's identity and exhibition graphics were developed in tandem with, and to complement, the exhibition design by leading architect Eva Jiricna. All the elements – two and three dimensional – use abstraction and a limitation of ornament as did Modernism itself; the core element is an oversized, san serif, lower-case 'M'. Shapes are bold and the graphics are applied as simple decals in the archetypal Modernist typeface Helvetica, set at an oblique angle and surrounded by plenty of white space.
