Mami Wata 'Luck is Alive'

In Senegal, Animism is based on the idea that everything is sentient: entities such as the ocean have a spirit or a soul. Mami Wata’s film, Luck is Alive, demonstrates an animistic sensibility through the concept of luck. The line ‘Luck is Alive’ encapsulates Animism’s relation to the world: a sense of chance and luck being alive. Through his belief in luck, our protagonist is led to the water, where he finds ultimate freedom. The film features Damme Samb, a surfer and believer in Animism, who comes from Dakar, Senegal.
