The lack of education on the benefits of having access to legal abortion make the Northeast the leading region in Brazil on death from unsafe abortion.
Seeing this reality, it is hard to imagine that the first ever use of medication abortion was reported by northeast women in the country.
To raise awareness among northeasts that abortion is healthcare, The Case for Her & Hey Jane present Crochet Data, an educational campaign that uses an essential part of the Northeast cultural identity, turning crochet items into media for articles and studies on the related benefits of safe abortion.
What did the judges have to say?
This concept was so powerful – taking the crochet needle (once an emblem of a tool for unsafe abortions) and beautifully reimagining how it could be used as a tool for abortion awareness, in the country where people first realised misoprostol (the medicine used for medication abortion) could be used for a safe abortion.
