Voices from Afghanistan

Women in Afghanistan have been stripped of their freedom under the extreme law and order of the Taliban. In defiance of the ban on education, underground schools and letter exchanges have emerged, connecting girls from Afghanistan with girls in the UK. Building on Monotype's established platform, we launched 'Voices from Afghanistan' - a platform that hosts a collection of typefaces directly extracted from their letters as well as a typographic interface. This allows girls to use these typefaces to create placards and social media posts, in turn encouraging younger girls to engage in political conversation, something which is too often dominated by men. 'Voices from Afghanistan' aims to give a voice and provide hope to women in Afghanistan who have been silenced.
