The Small-Coal-Man’s Tiny Travelling Theatre

In 1678, Clerkenwell resident and coal salesman Thomas Britton turned his coal shed into a concert hall called the Small-Coal- Man’s Musick Club, which attracted performances ranging from first-time amateur musicians to Handel. The ‘Tiny Travelling Theatre’ draws on contemporary accounts to replicate the ad-hoc attributes of the original venue. It gave its debut performance at Clerkenwell Design Week 2012. The mobile theatre, towed by a camper van, toured Clerkenwell occupying multiple sites. Inside, an audience of six enjoyed a series of performances, which explored the intense emotion of a micro live concert.
