The Folio Society - Gitanjali

The illustrator created illustrations for the cover and 6 poems for the Folio Society's illustrated edition of Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali. The goal was to transcend its geographical and cultural context, conveying the secular, humanistic spirit within his words, which often gets misjudged as sacred religious texts. The idea was to root the artwork in Bengal’s natural beauty - rivers, monsoons, paddy fields - and add a touch of magic realism. This was done using woodcut prints, which helped highlight the mystical element in his poetry through its textural and mark-making quality.
