Our Press Mat

As digital media floods daily life, people paradoxically have fewer chances to connect over shared topics. Marking its 80th year—and facing the same circulation slump as other local papers—the Daily Tohoku is rethinking what a newspaper can be. Noting that a full spread matches the size of a Japanese dining table, it created a placemat for diners featuring the Hamanasu flower and stories about local cuisine. The aim is to shift the newspaper from a simple information source to a spark for face‑to‑face conversation, strengthening communication within families and the local community.
