Ostalgia

Simona Rota’s ‘Ostalgia’ weaves a narrative around personal photographs taken on family holidays and images of Soviet architecture. The former category is taken from Rota’s own albums and are cropped so as to represent the fragmentary nature of memory. Two types of paper were used in the production, outlining the contrast between the image's distinct categories. The use of newspapers in its printing also responds to the form as being both a platform for freedom of expression as well as ideological manipulation.
