Bins and Benches

'Bins and Benches' is an interactive installation for a new public square outside the Junction Theatre in Cambridge. The work of art takes five ordinary bins and four wooden benches and injects each one with a magic serum of life, or advanced robotics, allowing them to break free of their usual staid and fixed positions and roam around the plaza area. Travelling happily in their natural environment, the benches and bins move amongst the other species that inhabit their world, exploring their plaza. Each bin and bench has its own personality and impulses. If it is raining, a bench may decide to park up under a tree waiting for someone to sit on it, whilst on a Wednesday the bins will line up waiting to be emptied. Occasionally they will all break into song; the bins forming a baritone barbershop sextet and the benches singing in a high soprano choir.
