How do you provide helpline details to a woman who will be beaten if these details are found? It’s been a longstanding dilemma for organisations such as Preventing Violence, New Zealand. Thanks to a simple sticker device, there’s a cheap and easily portable solution: adhesive, faux barcodes that disguise a helpline number as a code. They can be stuck onto any domestic object and go completely unnoticed by controlling partners. General practitioners and hospitals across New Zealand have adopted the barcode device, and international governmental and NGO agencies are following suit.
