The powerful central processing units inside our smartphones allow us to do amazing things during the day but remain mostly unused overnight. Samsung sought to take that unused computing power and put it to good use. Power Sleep is an app that lets people donate their smartphone's processing power to aid scientists in their quest to find cures for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's. Protein similarity calculations are an essential part of scientific research that require vast amounts of computing power that many labs can't afford. The Power Sleep app allows smartphones to work on small data packages containing protein sequences that can help with this research. To integrate the app into people's daily routines, it was designed to look and behave just like an alarm clock. So, by simply setting their alarm before going to bed, users agree to donate their smartphone to a scientific cause when it would otherwise be dormant.
