New Blood Entry — Letters to My Child
Adobe & LADbible / 2019
The last thing anyone wants to think about when they are giving birth is whether or not they will live to see their child. But unfortunately, harrowing statistics show that for women of color this fear is an ever-present aspect of their reality. Each year in the United States, about 700 to 1,200 women die from pregnancy or childbirth complications, and black women are about three to four times more likely to die. These weren’t just statistics to us. As women of color, we saw the opportunity to empower those like us, who are unaware of risks, bring it to the public consciousness, and start a change. LADbible and Adobe wanted to bring about positive change with their powerful platforms.
We created Letters to my Child, and with LADbible, we wanted to help shed light on this issue that has been swept under the rug and hidden in the dark. These emotional and powerfully raw stories will connect with mothers and families all over the world.
These women and families need to feel educated and empowered to make decisions during pregnancy and childbirth to have the best chance of living. We want to encourage at-risk mothers from all over, speak up and speak truth by writing a letter to their unborn child in the event of their death.
