The Surreal House

‘The Surreal House’ exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery created an extraordinary journey into the ‘mind of the house’. Featuring a wide collection of surrealist art, film, sculpture and architecture, the double-height gallery was transformed with a cluster of archetypal ‘house’ installations. Downstairs, they disorientated visitors in a labyrinth of dark corridors, shadowy corners and brooding chambers. Upstairs, the ‘houses’ became an abstract roofscape that drew on the familiar, the subconscious and the sublime. Composed apertures for physical and visual connections between rooms and exhibits blurred the subject/object relationship of the surrealist art, gallery, and visitors.
