Tá no Mapa!

Brazil is seen as a land of contrasts, a country divided between its unmistakable good and its unmapped evil. Favelas are the emblems of this evil, seen as nothing but dens of poverty and violence. AfroReggae is an NGO born inside a favela and understands that favelas are entire cities hidden in plain sight. There are no registered street names and no formal businesses. The regions were previously unmapped. JWT Brazil collaborated with AfroReggae to deliver smartphones and GPS devices to residents, enabling them to track footage that could later be crossed with existing satellite images, mapping entire districts of Brazil. JWT Brazil wanted to examine these areas and show them for the lively economic centres they are, and collect and publish data on favela landscapes to increase local social and economic development.
