Hojo

This ‘hojo’ is a small retreat in the central area of Tokyo built for the company Bambi. It combines the old Japanese notion of the pleasurable dwelling with reduced natural settings in the midst of a city. It also follows the traditional Japanese environmental design of a ‘box in a box’. It has a well which provides water to the small pool inside, and a tent roof for cooling vapour. The environmental territory is defined by the pipe screened threshold, which mediates the adjacent urban context to evoke the feeling of enclosing and continuity at the same time.
