Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

This total renovation of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum includes the Main Building, focusing on materials that convey the reality of the bombing to posterity, as well as the East Building. TANSEISHA Co tried to use victims’ perspectives to evoke the memory of those horrors, dividing the space into two areas. One, a group exhibit, makes August 6 the scene of a tragedy, retracing victims’ journeys. In the other, victims’ grief forms individual exhibits, with visitors confronting their despair. As a series of landscapes formed of memories and records, this space lets the cries of each survivor resonate with people worldwide.

Although it appears to be in a traditional mould on the surface, I find it deeply poetic in its experience. It captures the timeless memory of a nation. A poignant moment, frozen in time through black-and-white images with hints of colour, with the rows of meticulously catalogued objects. It is at once symbolic and real. It presents the ferocity of the life-annihilating nuclear detonation and devastation in abject stillness and in silence; engaging the deep, dark, empty spaces of the mind and soul, filling it with remembrance. This exhibition project contrasts well with another powerful installation project. From something huge and permanent to something that is urgent but temporal.
