BP Helios House

Working closely with BP, BIG embraced the paradox of creating a green gas station by up-cycling – a process that conserves key resources wherever possible – and transforming a dilapidated 1970s gas station in Los Angeles into Helios House, a ‘living lab’ for sustainable design and building practices. Helios House was designed to stimulate dialogue, promote education and foster discussion on the topic of environmental stewardship. The water, heat, energy, lighting, material and all communication systems of Helios House were built to maximise energy efficiency and sustainability. The performance benefits will be evaluated and shared with visitors and partners for possible use in future projects. Essentially, Helios House uses design to proffer a novel BP brand ethos through urban, architectural and engineering solutions.
