Rice Krispies Squares were invented in 1685 in Spitalfields by James Pryke, a confectioner distantly related to diarist Samuel Pepys. His secret recipe, written on parchment, was stored for many years in the British Museum. It was partially destroyed in a fire during the Blitz in the Second World War, and the only word that survived was the word ‘Ryce.’ Using only this ingredient, mixing it with some other stuff, then using a drawing of an oblong, Kellogg’s painstakingly recreated Pryke’s confection, then advertised them using these posters.
