About
Astrid Seme has been running her eponymous Vienna-based studio for visual communication. With a strong focus on typography, the studio specializes in books and editorial projects, visual identities, exhibition design, and websites. Next to her design practice she has an ongoing research in typography and its vocal dimensions. This hybrid practice has been exhibited internationally in both art and design contexts, including Typojanchi Seoul, Kunsthalle Basel, Mimosa House London, and the Fikra Graphic Design Biennial Sharjah. In 2019 she published ”Baroness Elsa’s em dashes“, an anthology dedicated to a single punctuation mark—the em dash. The book has been widely recognized within the art and design community and was released in a second extended edition in 2022. Astrid has been awarded internationally with the Gold Medal at Best Book Design from All Over the World, the Walther Tiemann Honorary Prize, the Tokyo Type Directors Club award, and State Prizes at the Most Beautiful Books in Austria. Together with Thomas Geiger, Astrid also co-runs Mark Pezinger Books, a publishing house for artists’ books. She currently lectures at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
