After hearing New Zealanders in the UK were missing their favourite beer, a working Speight’s Alehouse was strapped to the deck of a ship and sailed from Dunedin to London, complete with a crew recruited in a nationwide search. The 16-week voyage received over 20 minutes of prime time national television news coverage and extensive press reports, while a satellite link transmitted the action on the boat to a dedicated website. New Zealand’s only nightly prime time sports programme and the country’s biggest radio network provided weekly coverage of all the action. The arrival in London drew another crowd and more news coverage. The adventure was made into a hour-long documentary aired on Sky TV.
