Power to the People

Award: Yellow Pencil

Yellow Pencil / Poster Advertising / Enhanced Poster Advertising / 2007

Billboards are often viewed as visual pollution. We created a billboard that gives back to the community by attaching solar panels to it. It supplies energy to a school that feeds 1,100 children in one of South Africa's poorest townships. Nedbank's payoff line, “Make Things Happen”, is elevated from mere words to tangible action. These boards are being rolled out across the country. Their value to people in need is enormous, but imagine if all the world's advertisers adopted this idea: we may even be able to make a dent in global warming, one of the major causes of which is electricity consumption.
