We took on the BBC brief, which asked us to “develop a digital product or service for the BBC that serves as an interface between physical and digital,” utilizing the “flow of data.” Our solution, BBC X-RAY, exposes how a reader’s demographics and preferences can put them in an ‘algorithm bubble.’ It’s become more and more obvious that using algorithms to tailor content feeds is damaging our news consumption because it limits our access to information and narrows our world view. We believe BBC should be the first to educate news readers about this problem by exposing algorithms for how limiting they are, as BBC has long stood for truth and societal good.
