Enhanced by stab binding, a traditional Japanese bookbinding technique that can combine a range of materials, including paper, thread, fabric and foil, the Essence of Japanese Design possesses an authentic tactile character complementary to its subject matter. The cover design is inspired by Japanese lacquerware. In combination with the morphed, organic shapes, the cover references the relationships between the traditional and contemporary objects featured in the book, highlighting enduring themes, techniques and motifs in Japanese design.
