  • New Blood 2010 (revisited)

On the last week of June, falling smack-bang in the middle the World cup, the Cannes advertising festival and a searing heat wave, the festival certainly faced its share of challenges. However, with over 1,500 exhibitors, and no less than 7,000 industry visitors recorded, it’s safe to say that 2010 has been the biggest and best year of New Blood yet- despite the sweltering heat!

This year New Blood was situated at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane – right in the heart of London’s vibrant East End. An area renowned for its abundance of creativity: studios, galleries and performance venues; for the first time New Blood took place within the midst of the annual ‘Free Range’ graduates’ festival.

The outstandingly high turn-out was aided by the fantastic new venue: industry based in the area, casual passers-by and visitors to other parts of the Free Range exhibition were all compelled to pop in for a ‘quick look’- which inevitably became hours and a tour of the entire exhibition.

The response to our new location has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re encouraged that we’re continuing to provide a platform that can maximise students’ exposure as well as expanding and diversifying the New Blood audience.

This year was all about action – the festival’s theme was ‘Networking’. The boys from ShellsuitZombie hosted the Creative Face-offs, film-screenings and conducted general rickshaw-oriented mayhem. There was also the portfolio surgeries- a chance for students to have their books critiqued by industry- with over 40 creative professionals taking part. New and most exciting this year- as part of our efforts to maximise interaction between the industry and exhibitors, we teamed up with some of the greatest names in the industry to offer more than 1000 spaces on talks, workshops and tours that took place across the week in studios and agencies nearby.

The feedback we’ve received from industry, exhibitors and Network members alike has been resolutely positive. We plan to go on building New Blood to make it bigger and better than ever before.

  • Best New Blood 09: Callum Parish

Best New Blood winner, Callum Parish, explains how D&AD’s graduate showcase helped kick-start his career.

“My main concern when graduating was that I wouldn’t find a job and my design career as I knew it would slowly dissolve. I was also concerned that if I did get a job I wouldn’t be good enough and would find it hard to prove myself and work up the ladder. I have been quite fortunate as this has not happened. I now find myself worrying about more irritating matters, like trains being delayed and getting to work on time,” explains Parish.

  • Sorry old blood, New Blood has arrived

New Blood 2010 is finally upon us and well and truly underway. Hordes of aspiring creatives from the best advertising and design courses across the world have descended on Shoreditch for D&AD’s annual graduate showcase, hoping to secure jobs and work placements from agencies, studios and brands scouting for the next big thing.

This afternoon, ‘Best New Blood’ judging will commence at Brick Lane’s Old Truman Brewery, with creative professionals deciding which stand, team or individual displays the most outstanding creative ideas, executed and presented to the highest standard.

Networking with the industry is the hot topic. Over the next five days the New Blood Festival will take over Shoreditch, with events hosted by design, digital and advertising agencies, aiming to give new graduates the best possible start to their professional careers. Each has come up with a unique way to engage with graduates and tutors, hosting talks, workshops, parties, and even a football match.

  • Best New Blood 09: Eleanor Stewart

Last year Eleanor Stewart graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a degree in Visual Communication, showcasing her work at D&AD New Blood.

“It was a crazy rush to get everything ready in time, a bit like my degree show take two. Upon finishing our display, people were free to come into the space and see the work. It was really interesting to see work from other colleges and art schools. Walking round the stands looking at other graduates work felt a bit like the first day of school, when everyone is stealthily checking out each others new haircuts and pencil cases.”Stewart admits there is pressure to land a dream job straight from university, but believes this is an unrealistic expectation.

  • New Blood Festival: Erasmus World Cup Win Dough!

Can you keep it up in the World Cup Win Dough?

We have a window, and we have a World Cup on our hands, so what are we going to do about?

To kick start the event D&AD has teamed up with Erasmus in Shoreditch to launch the “World Cup Win Dough”, a cutting edge slice of crowd-sourced interactive meets digital-physical game that has the balls to ask ‘How long can you keep it up’?

From Friday, members of the public will be invited to test their football skills in front of passers by at the Erasmus window, all vying for the chance to win £1,000 cold, hard cash as a unique celebration of the World Cup and the D&AD’s New Blood Festival, which runs at the same time.

Six finalists will then be called in for extra time and given the opportunity to fight it out for the grand title of Keepy Upsy Champion.

The competition will run weekdays 12 to 2pm and Saturday 10 to 12pm until the final whistle is blown on 26th June. Live feeds will be posted online on youtube, flicker, tumbler, twitter and facebook in real time.

The idea was created by design team Leandra Carneiro and Emily Konstantinidis who entered a D&AD competition, launched by Erasmus for the chance to design an eye catching installation in time for the World Cup. Graeme Dignan of Erasmus comments: “The idea is simple. D&AD Competition winners wanted to design it as bait, as a lure to tear people away from their sofas and get them playing a bit of footy themselves over the coming four weeks.”

So the production budget became the Jules Rimet trophy for our very own tournament, and all you need to do to get your hands on it is keep a football off the ground for longer than anyone else — as long as you do it right here in our window and, of course, within the laws of the beautiful game. Any swearing and, trust us, you’ll see red, and all participants will be rigorously tested for performance enhancing drugs. Of course.

The entire event will be tracked online using free tools and social media to keep everyone informed.  The top eight entrants will then be invited back for a fitting World Cup Win Dough Final to fight it out for the trophy (cash).

So if you think you have the stamina to go the distance, don’t sit on the side lines, take to the pitch, you might just be the Drog’s Bollocks!
