  • Five Black Pencils awarded at the D&AD Awards 2010

Australia and South African agencies take home their nation’s first Black Pencils last night, as SapientNitro (Brisbane) and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris(Johannesburg) were awarded at the D&AD Awards Ceremony in London. The Black Pencil is awarded annually to groundbreaking, work in advertising and design.  All of the winning work can be viewed at: awards.dandad.org/2010

‘The Best Job in the World’, the campaign that began with a classified ad and ended with an Oprah Winfrey interview, won Black Pencils in Integrated and Direct for Sapient Nitro. TBWA\Hunt Lascaris took home a Black Pencil in Graphic Design for the ‘Trillion Dollar Flyer’ – the campaign that turned money into a medium to promote exiled newspaper The Zimbabwean.

‘The High Line’, almost 2.5km of Inner City Park built on a section of a former elevated freight railroad in New York City, was created by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and awarded a Black Pencil in Environmental Design.  Apple continued it’s winning streak at D&AD with a Black Pencil in Websites for Apple.com.

D&AD President Paul Brazier said, “And there we have it.  Proof, if it were needed, that creativity shines in the face of global recession, and even political oppression.  Over the last few years at D&AD, ever more ingenious creative work has been rewarded.  Maybe the rise of digital has had something to do with it. That showed us you didn’t need to use traditional media to solve clients’ problems. And when a simple stamp on a useless bank note can make a statement for freedom of speech and a Barrier Reef tourist destination can become the biggest story on the news, it really feels like times are changing. ”

Forty-two Yellow Pencils were also awarded to work that set new standards in creative excellence tonight. In addition to its Black Pencil, TBWA\Hunt Lascaris was awarded 3 Yellow Pencils in Graphic Design, Outdoor and Integrated for different elements of the agency’s work for The Zimbabwean.  Droga5 Australia won three Yellow Pencils also, two for ‘Regulars’ for Victoria Bitter in TV & Cinema Advertising and also Writing for Advertising.  The agency’s third Pencil was awarded in Direct for ‘4320LA/SYD’ for V Australia.

‘We Choose the Moon’ the recreation of the historic Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in real time for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum won two Yellow Pencils, in Websites and Digital Advertising.

Apartmento, the ‘everyday interiors magazine’ scooped one of two Yellow Pencils in Magazine & Newspaper Design, the second went to Elle UK’s Lily Allen Special Issue.

  • Student Awards Nominees online

Eighty-three student teams have been nominated for a Pencil at the D&AD Student Awards in a year that saw juries being more exacting than ever. Just over 3000 teams entered the Student Awards this year from almost 300 colleges – up 20% on 2009.

Two hundred teams made it In-Book, representing the best work of the year, marking a drop from last year’s results, when 310 entries made it into the Student Annual.  Nominated work will be online later today at studentawards.dandad.org.

Final results will be announced on 29 June at a public ceremony at Spitalfields Market in London.

“Judges have proven to be tougher than ever,’ says D&AD Education Chairman Greg Quinton.  “Entries to the Student Awards continue to grow and our juries have raised the bar to ensure D&AD’s high standards remain second to none.”

“It’s been a tough year for graduates and professionals alike.  It’s clear there’s great talent out there and we all have to work that bit harder to stand out.  That can often lead to groundbreaking creative thinking and I look forward to seeing these names crop up at the professional Awards in a few years.”

Congratulations to everyone who made it through!

Spike Jonze was presented with the D&AD President’s Award 2010 last night.

The  President selects the recipient each year in recognition of an outstanding contribution to creativity.  Past recipients include Sir Alan Parker, Jonathan Ive, and Sir John Hegarty.

Jonze has been awarded 6 D&AD Yellow Pencils since 1995 for his TV commercials and music videos.

D&AD President Paul Brazier has got this to say:

‘The term maverick is often overused. But I don’t think anyone would deny that Spike Jonze is a true creative maverick. And I am delighted to give him the D&AD President’s Award.’

‘The breadth of his work is staggering, covering everything from music videos and advertising, to TV and feature films.  Yet he seems to have an inexhaustible supply of original ideas, no matter what medium he works in. Although each project is distinctive in its own right, they are all marked by one thing.  To watch Jonze’s work is to enter a world just like, and yet completely unlike, our own.’
