Youtube is undoubtedly a phenomenon, with 4 billion videos viewed a day and 800 million unique users each month. However, in an age when anyone and everyone can play the director, opportunites to get noticed can be hard to come by.
YouTube looked to us to showcase their platform as the perfect channel to accelerate your career as a commercial director, get feedback from peers and test ideas.
In response, we set up D&AD The Next Director Award, launched to unearth the best new directional talent and promote it straight back to both production houses and advertising agencies.
We brought together an A-list panel of judges including Dougal Wilson, David Bruno, Laura Gregory, Ringan Ledwige and Juliette Larthe to find the next generation of filmmakers.
In 2015, both the winner and the shortlisted directors will get incredible exposure at international screenings supported by MOFILM and through the D&AD and YouTube platforms. To top that, they’ll also receive 1:1 mentoring from award-winning production companies, access to Youtube editing suites and potential production grants.
In it’s inaugural year we had an incredible 251 entries, with 23 talented directors making it through to the shortlist; their videos spanning animation, documentaries, music videos and commercials.
On announcing the first shortlist, Alison Lomax, Head of Creative Agency Partnerships at Youtube, commented, “I was blown away by the high level talent and variety of films across Branded Content, Music, Videos and Documentaries. A true reflection of the calibre of this next generation of filmmakers on YouTube.”
The D&AD Next Director Award has firmly positioned YouTube as the place to tell stories and build profile, whilst enabling the platform to visibly support creativity, talent and the industry.
