By connecting Shutterstock with D&AD's community, we focused on sharing inspiration, tools, and best practice. D&AD Awards entrants, winners, and the greater creative community, were given opportunities to engage with the Shutterstock brand and services at D&AD Festival. We worked to ensure festival-goers identified Shutterstock's imagery as an asset for craft and creativity.
Shutterstock collaborated with LA-based artist Ornamental Conifer, to create an interactive art studio installation in the Shutterstock Lounge at D&AD Festival 2017. Conifer, known for his humorous hand-painted typography, paid homage to London’s continuous cultural evolution, turning the blank walls of the Shutterstock Lounge into a working studio. Within this space the Judges, Speakers and VIPs rubbed shoulders with festival-goers who gathered to watch the artist in action.
Over the course of the week, Conifer interspersed iconic images of London with hand-painted cockney rhyming slang. The images were then exhibited throughout the Lounge for all to admire and attendees were given the chance to win a piece of the original work.
“I focused my varied lettering skills on highlighting the evolution of hand painted signage seen throughout the streets of east London,” says Conifer, "ranging from Victorian facades, local handmade market signage, newspaper headlines on posters outside newsagents, finding signage along the canals, graffiti, ‘A’ frames outside pubs, fish and chip shop windows and the occasional, odd sandwich board.” Ornamental Conifer, aka Nicolai Sclater.

“This was one of the most inspiring D&AD festivals to date. And seeing attendees and luminaries like Stefan Sagmeister and Piera Gelardi drawn to our lounge activation was hugely rewarding." Jon Feinstein, Senior Partnerships Manager. Shutterstock
