The founders of Mother win D&AD President’s Award 2023
The announcement was made on May 25 during the D&AD Awards at BFI Southbank
The founders of the Independent creative company Mother have been awarded the 2023 D&AD President’s Award by D&AD President Richard Brim.
Mother was founded in London in 1996 by a group of creative, free-thinking individuals sitting around a kitchen table eating lunch. It’s there that the group decided that they were hungry – not for more sandwiches, but to do things differently. They wanted to break free from the shackles of traditional agencies and be 100% independent. To be free to do the best work possible. Today, Mother is still fiercely independent, but now there are over 500 like-minded people in their family, with offices across London, New York, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Berlin.
Speaking about his decision to award the founders of Mother the D&AD President’s Award, D&AD President Richard Brim said: “I chose them for many of the obvious reasons but the main one being I’m a massive believer in the power of a creative ‘gang’ and no one embodies that more than Mother. Their whole philosophy is based in the creative collective and the possibilities that it holds, and as an outsider looking in that was intoxicating. It wasn’t just myself who was drawn to that as over the years some of the industry’s most talented individuals have sat round that table.
Naturally, with that unfair share of talent comes the work, brilliant, funny, populist bat shit crazy work, work my mates in Manchester knew and work that showed the rest of the industry a new way. But it’s not just their output that showed their dedication to creativity, it is how they behaved, the companies they started, the investments they made and the films they commissioned. So, with all this in mind and the criteria being someone that changed things for the better I feel pretty confident in my choice of that someone being Mother.”
